CHIPPENDALE MAHOGANY OXBOW BUREAU ATTRIBUTED TO JOHN COGSWELL
Boston, Circa 1770
One-board overhanging top with molded edge. Four graduated full-width drawers with cock-bead molding. Brasses and escutcheons believed to be original. Molded base with a fan-carved pendant drop. Delicately carved claw & ball feet, the claws curling subtly backward as typical for the cabinetmaker.

  • Provenance:
Northeast Auctions, Portsmouth, New Hampshire, November 5-6, 1994, Lot #562.
    Wayne Pratt.
    Marguerite Riordan, Stonington, Connecticut.
Acquired from Marguerite Riordan, February 1, 1995.
The Collection of Nancy & Larry Dickson.

    Notes:
John Cogswell (1738-1819) moved to Boston from nearby Ipswich, Massachusetts, about 1760. He is particularly known for a bombé chest-on-chest that bears his signature, now in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. It is believed he trained with a member of the Gooding family, as he married Abigail Gooding in 1762. After her death 20 years later he married Abiel Page. He held various town offices in Boston from 1778 to 1809 and was still active as a cabinetmaker until at least 1789.
  • Dimensions: Height 32.75". Total width 36". Case width 33". Depth 20.75".
  • Condition: The chest is in overall exceptional condition. Ball and claw feet likely retain their original heights (metal buttons added later). Backside right leg has a wood chip to one talon, other talons has very small chips at the extreme tips. Chest has two small repairs to note: one on the front at the curved molding just above the decorative fan carving that runs through to the left front corner molding, the other at the front of the drawer support for the top drawer (see photographs). Two very thin age splits on right side panel, one even smaller on the left side panel at bottom. Top has non-obtrusive and age-appropriate surface wear and two very small burn marks. Drawers slide fairly easily, chest is solid and sturdy with no odors of any kind.

The absence of a condition report does not imply an object is free of defects. All items may have normal signs of age and wear commensurate with their age; these issues will likely not be mentioned in the condition report. Please contact Eldred's before the auction with any condition questions. Questions about condition will not be answered after purchase. Condition reports are provided as a courtesy, and we are not responsible for any errors or omissions. Important note on frames: Frames are not guaranteed to be in the same condition as they are in the item photograph. Due to handling and shipping, many frames, especially antique ones, are prone to losses. If you have questions about the condition of a frame, please contact us prior to the auction.
