Very Scarce and Desirable U.S. Marine Corps Contract Colt Model 1909 New Service Double Action Revolver with Fine U.S.M.C. Holster and Factory Letter This is one of only 1,300 Colt Model 1909 New Service double action .45 caliber revolvers ordered by the U.S. Marine Corps through the U.S. Navy in May 1909. The included factory letter lists the revolver as shipped on November 30, 1909, to the U.S. Marine Corps Depot Quartermaster in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, with a 5 1/2 inch barrel, blue finish, and checkered walnut grips, as part of 400 guns of the same type in the shipment, with a special further notation in the factory letter stating, "The revolvers with serial numbers 26001 to 27000 were assigned butt numbers in the range of 1001 to 2000." In addition to the "U.S.M.C." markings, the U.S.M.C. Model 1909 revolvers have a narrower round profile butt and are fitted with hand-checkered two-piece walnut grips. The butt is roll-stamped "U.S./M.C." in two lines behind the lanyard swivel and has the Marine Corps serial number "No/1/258" stamped in two lines ahead of the swivel. The top of the barrel has the standard two-line address and patent dates and the left is marked "COLT D.A. 45". The left side of the frame behind the cylinder latch has the Rampant Colt trademark on top of a stylized "C". The Colt serial number "26258" is stamped on the inside of the frame and cylinder crane, and also marked in pencil on the interior of the grip panels. The partial serial number "6258" is stamped on the rear face of the cylinder latch. The Colt triangle "VP" proof mark is stamped on the left side of the frame above the front trigger guard bow and a "3" assembler's mark is above the rear trigger guard bow. Includes a scarce "U.S.M.C." embossed leather holster, of which only 600 were manufactured per page 362 of "U.S. Military Holsters and Pistol Cartridge Boxes" by Meadows.
