Ainsworth Inspected U.S. Colt Cavalry Model Single Action Army Revolver Offered here is a historic 1874 production Colt Cavalry Model Single Action Army revolver, inspected by Orville W. Ainsworth, extensively used out west, and later beautifully professionally restored by Turnbull with an accompanying invoice from them detailing all the work performed on this specific revolver. Orville W. Ainsworth was the principal sub-inspector of the Ordnance Department, in October 1873 through November 7, 1874, and performed the sub-inspection of every one of the first approximately 12,500 U.S. contract Colt Single Action Army revolvers in the recorded serial range between 200 through 14343 per page 201 of "A Study of the Colt Single Action Army Revolver" by Graham, Kopec, and Moore. The barrel has a blade front sight and is roll-stamped with the script address "+COLT'S PT. F. A. MFG. Co HARTFORD, CT. U.S.A.+". Two-line patent date markings ahead of a "US" property stamp are on the left of the frame. Small Ainsworth "A" sub-inspection mark and "P" proof marks on both the barrel and cylinder. Small Ainsworth "A" sub-inspection marks are also on the trigger guard and top of the back strap. Matching visible serial numbers are marked on the frame, trigger guard, cylinder, and butt, and assembly number "240" is on the loading gate. A bordered "OWA" cartouche is stamped on the left of the grip.
