  • Provenance: Note:
This painting formed part of a series of works executed by William Bruce Ellis Ranken at Lynnewood Hall, the grand estate of Joseph E. Widener. Dated 1917, it was created during the occupancy of Joseph Widener (1871–1943) and his wife, Eleanor Holmes Pancoast Widener (1874–1929).

Ranken first traveled to the United States in 1916 and, following introductions from John Singer Sargent, received commissions from several prominent American families, including the Vanderbilt family and the Whitney family. This scene depicts the Reception Room at Lynnewood Hall and forms part of a rare visual record of one of America’s great Gilded Age estates.

Prominently featured is the tapestry Dream of Rinaldo by François Boucher. The tapestry, together with numerous furnishings and decorative objects visible in Ranken’s composition, is now preserved within the Widener Collection at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
  • Condition: Framed: 34 1/2 x 26 1/4 x 1 1/4 in.
Sheet has been fully laid to backing board. Significant soiling: pinpoint black and brown stains throughout, most notable in light areas of tapestry. Small white accretion to center left under central figure's feet. Additional images available upon request.
