Condition:
Shows age and wear, consistent with a utilitarian object of significant antiquity. Extensive patination and surface oxidation are present across all brass elements. Multiple visible solder repairs, particularly around the central column's mid-section and on the bottom drip pan, where silver-colored solder is clearly apparent. These repairs exhibit age and are likely period or early restorations. Minor dents, dings, and surface abrasions are present throughout, indicative of long-term use and handling. The individual oil spouts show varying degrees of minor deformation and some surface pitting; one spout appears to have a notable seam separation or crack near its upper edge. General unevenness in the brass finish, with areas of darker tarnish contrasting with lighter, rubbed sections. Despite these signs of age and repair, all original components, including the original hanger and all six oil spouts, appear to be present.

Item Description
Weight: 2lbs 8.8oz

An exceptional piece of religious history and cultural heritage, this antique German Jewish Judenstern Sabbath Oil Lamp stands as a poignant testament to centuries of tradition. Rooted deeply in Ashkenazi Jewish culture, particularly prevalent in Central and Eastern Europe, the Judenstern (meaning "Jew's Star") was an indispensable fixture in the homes of observant families. More than a mere light source, this hanging oil lamp embodies the sanctity and spiritual warmth of Shabbat, the Jewish Sabbath.

The lamp's distinctive design is both functional and symbolic. It features a robust, ornately turned central brass column from which a star-shaped framework descends. Suspended from this framework are six individual conical oil spouts, each designed to hold a wick immersed in oil. The six-pointed star configuration subtly references the Magen David (Star of David), a powerful and enduring emblem of Jewish identity. A practical drip pan at the base ensures cleanliness, catching any oil overflow. The presence of its original hanger and all six oil spouts makes this a remarkably complete example, a rarity given that these smaller, detachable components were frequently lost or damaged over generations of use.

This magnificent lamp was primarily used for the lighting of the Sabbath. As Friday sundown approached, ushering in Shabbat, Jewish women would perform the sacred mitzvah (commandment) of lighting the Sabbath lights, inviting peace and holiness into their homes. The Judenstern would then burn throughout the Sabbath, providing continuous light and fulfilling the religious obligation. While primarily associated with Shabbat, similar oil lamps could also be used for other Jewish festivals (Yom Tov). Given its traditional form and the nature of its very old repairs and patination, this piece likely dates to the late 19th to early 20th century, reflecting a rich period of Jewish life and craftsmanship.
