SILK NEEDLEWORK MEMORIAL PICTURE ATTRIBUTED TO MARY BALCH'S SCHOOL
18th Century
"Sacred to the Memory of Mrs. Rebeccah Maxwell. Obit. April 21, 1792 Aged 42 Years.". Depicts a young lady resting against a memorial below a weeping willow, with an expansive mountain lake landscape opening out before her. A building with a sharply peaked roof is nestled in the trees in the middle ground, and a sailing vessel is moored off the village church in the distance. Worked in earth-tone threads on watercolored silk, with very finely rendered watercolor detailing to the lady's face and arms and the background mountains and clouds. Housed in a giltwood frame with a black eglmoise mat with gilt "Rebeccah Maxwell." in the lower border. Retains paper label for framer Peter Grinell and Son, Providence, Rhode Island.

  • Provenance:
    Kaja Veilleux, Newcastle, Maine.
The Collection of Nancy & Larry Dickson.

    Notes:
Mary Balch's school in Providence, Rhode Island, was one of the most important schools for young women in 18th Century America. The school, sometimes known as the Polly Balch School or just the Balch School, was started by Mary "Polly" Balch (1762-1831) sometime before 1785. The school began offering boarding in 1801 and by 1821 had 113 students enrolled. The Balch style of embroidery often included many of the elements you see here -- figures in elegant clothing, naturalistic floral borders, a pseudo-classical arch and a public building as a focal point. In addition to embroidery, the school's curriculum included writing, music and dancing, aided by various teachers and students from Rhode Island College (later Brown University). Betty Ring notes the Balch School "was unquestionably the best-attended private school in Providence [...] Mary was respected by her patrons and lovingly revered by her students, many of whom remarked upon her admirable qualities in later life".
  • Dimensions: 18.75" x 25" sight. Framed 24.5" x 30.5".
  • Condition: Grinnell label affixed verso.
