A charming and visually engaging mid-20th century scrapbook assembled in 1945, preserving a thoughtfully curated collection of colorful magazine illustrations, advertising artwork, and Americana from the closing months of World War II. The black textured scrapbook features an embossed profile of a Native American chief on the front cover with gilt "Scrapbook" lettering and cord binding. An ownership inscription on the opening page identifies the original owner as "Maxine Babbitt" and is dated April 15, 1945, placing the album squarely within the final months of World War II. Throughout the album are carefully mounted color illustrations clipped from contemporary magazines and periodicals, reflecting the popular visual culture of the era. Subjects include aviation, military aircraft, naval vessels, sailing ships, hunting dogs, sporting scenes, wildlife, fishing, mountain landscapes, outdoor recreation, children's illustrations, and patriotic imagery. Several illustrations are by well-known American commercial artists and exhibit the rich color lithography and painterly realism characteristic of the Golden Age of American magazine illustration. Assembled scrapbooks such as this provide a fascinating snapshot of American life and aesthetics during the 1940s, preserving ephemeral printed material that was seldom intended to survive. The dated inscription and cohesive wartime-era content make this an appealing historical artifact for collectors of Americana, World War II ephemera, vintage advertising art, illustration, and graphic design. A handsome and evocative period scrapbook documenting the visual culture of America in 1945.

  • Literature: The 1940s represented a golden era of American magazine illustration, with artists producing richly colored imagery for publications such as The Saturday Evening Post, Collier's, Life, and numerous outdoor, military, and family magazines. Personal scrapbooks assembled from these publications offer valuable insight into the interests, aspirations, and visual culture of wartime America while preserving examples of commercial illustration that often disappeared after their original publication.
  • Circa: 1945.
  • Condition: Overall very good vintage condition. Covers exhibit light handling and shelf wear consistent with age. Interior pages remain securely bound with mounted magazine clippings throughout. Minor age toning, occasional edge wear, and light foxing or adhesive staining may be present. Ownership inscription dated April 15, 1945, on the first page. Overall presents well.
