19TH CENTURY TEXAS CATTLE BRANDS
Exceptionally rare set of three letter sheets from the Francklyn Land and Cattle Company White Deer Ranche in Mobeetie, Texas. The verso of each sheet illustrates approx. fifty different marks and brands used by the company, where on each head of cattle the brand could be found, and its attribution. Also shown are 'American Herd' and 'Road Brands', as well as 'Horse and Mule Brand[s]'. The front of these letters sheets bear a pencil A.L.S. of PHILIP G. AMUNUNDRO, a civil engineer and surveyor who writes George Tyng (1842-1906) from 'Indian Creek Camp', May 3, 1887. Tyng had been appointed U.S. marshal in Arizona Territory, after which he purchased the Arizona Sentinel. Three years later he sold the newspaper and moved to Mexico City, becoming managing director of the railroad. He then became manager of White Deer Lands Trust, before moving on to mining in Utah. He was killed in an avalanche while seated in his office. Amonundro goes into great detail about his search for surveying mounds left on the property, describes their condition and location, etc. Folds and some short marginal tears else very good. Early Texas cattle brand references are of great rarity.
