A Yaqui rattle of moth cocoons
Mid/late 19th century; Northern Mexico
With tag from Philbrook Museum, Tulsa, OK
Each cocoon sewn into a hide strap

  • Provenance: Other notes:
Cocoon rattles, known among the Yaqui and Mayo (Yoreme) peoples of northwestern Mexico as ténabaris or teneboim, are traditional percussion instruments made from the empty cocoons of the Four Mirrors butterfly (Rothschildia species), a giant silk moth native to the region. After the moth emerges, the lightweight silk cocoons are collected, filled with small pebbles, and sewn into long strands on heavy cotton cord.

Worn around the ankles or lower legs, the rattles produce a distinctive dry, rustling sound as the wearer moves. Strands range from a few dozen cocoons to lengthy wraps extending several feet, as seen in the present example.

Most commonly associated with Deer Dance and Pascola performances, cocoon rattles have been documented since at least the nineteenth century, with photographs from around 1870 depicting dancers wearing them around their ankles. Traditional Yaqui narratives relate that rattlesnakes attempted to attack the deer (Yo'awa) as it approached the Yaqui River to drink. The deer escaped, but the snakes succeeded only in wrapping themselves around its legs. The placement of cocoon rattles on the ankles and lower legs is said to recall this encounter.
