ITALIAN CAMPAIGN FILE OF GEN. GEOFFREY KEYES (12)
GEOFFREY KEYES (1888-1967) Highly decorated Lieutenant General who commanded the II Corps during World War II. Keyes was George Patton's invaluable chief of staff, leading Patton's I Corps in Morocco, and accepting the surrender of Palermo. Keyes was Chief of Staff, 2nd Armored Division, commanded the 9th Armored Division, Dep. Commander, 7th Army [Sicily], Commander 7th and 3rd Armies (assuming Patton's old command), and headed occupation forces in Austria. He also served with distinction under Mark Clark at Anzio, Cassino and before Rome. Good grouping of 12 documents from Keyes' service in Italy at the head of the II Corps under Gen. Mark Clark. Included is: Keyes' linen-backed battle map of the western coast of Italy from Civitavecchia to Leghorn; Keyes' copy of his citation for the Bronze Star for his service in Italy; Keyes' Feb. 9, 1944 message to the men of the II Corps: 'THE BATTLE FOR CASSINO HAS REACHED ITS DECVISIVE STAGE...[GERMAN] STUBBORN RESISTANCE AND HIS REPEATED USE OF RESERVES...YOU HAVE ESTABLISHED YOUR SUPERIORITY...WITHOUT RTELIEF OR REST...TODAY'S AND TOMORROW'S BATTLE IS A FINAL TEST OF COURAGE AND ENDURANCE...' (the attack was broken by overwhelming machine gun fire from the slopes below the monastery; Keyes' Dec. 23 Christmas message to the troops; menus for II Corps Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners in the field; a similar New Year's menu signed 'Geoff' by Keyes; 7th Army and II Corps blank letterheads; Dec. 11, 1943 II Corps 'Scoop' newspaper, 2pp. legal folio, 'Yanks on Rome Road'; a small piece or red ribbon from one of Keyes' awards, etc. Originates directly from Keyes' estate, with a copy of his Report of Separation from the Army. Overall very good.
