A finely executed hand-painted earthenware jardinière produced by Doulton Burslem, England, bearing the firm's celebrated crowned "DWB" backstamp incorporating the 1897 trademark registration. This substantial cachepot exemplifies the exceptional decorative wares that established Doulton among England's premier ceramic manufacturers during the late Victorian and Edwardian periods. The exterior is lavishly decorated with raised enamel chrysanthemums in lavender, cream, and green against a finely stippled ivory ground, enriched with gilt outlining and an ornate scrolling border beneath a gilded rim. Interspersed among the floral decoration are charming naturalistic scenes depicting songbirds perched around an elaborate birdcage, floral baskets overflowing with chrysanthemums, and delicate garden motifs inspired by Japanese aesthetics that were highly fashionable in Europe following the Aesthetic and Japonisme movements. The interior is equally remarkable, featuring an unusually elaborate aquatic scene populated with hand-painted koi and goldfish in shades of cobalt blue, iron red, and black, swimming amongst aquatic plants beneath a finely crazed ivory glaze. Such fully decorated interiors are considerably less common than standard production examples and significantly enhance both visual impact and collector desirability. Doulton's Burslem factory became renowned for combining traditional English ceramic craftsmanship with influences drawn from Japanese and Continental decorative arts. Hand-painted examples exhibiting this level of decoration required multiple firing stages and extensive skilled labor, resulting in wares intended for the upper-middle and luxury home furnishings market during the early twentieth century. Today, richly decorated Doulton Burslem jardinières remain highly sought after by collectors of English art pottery, Aesthetic Movement ceramics, and fine decorative arts. The combination of extensive enamel work, elaborate gilt embellishment, unusual bird-and-chrysanthemum garden scenes, and the beautifully painted koi interior makes this an especially attractive display piece suitable for both traditional and contemporary interiors.
