Attributed to Walter Feldman (1925-2017) American, Abstract Oil on Masonite. Signed upper right corner. Walter Feldman was born in 1925 in Lynn Massachusetts. He was an American painter, printmaker, mosaicist, educator, and founder of Ziggurat Press whose life and work were deeply shaped by his immigrant upbringing, World War II service, and commitment to modern art. Born in Massachusetts to Eastern European Jewish immigrants, Feldman studied at the Yale School of Fine Arts before serving in intense combat during World War II, where he was wounded in the Battle of the Bulge and later turned to painting as a form of healing. After earning his BFA and MFA at Yale under influential artists including Willem de Kooning and Josef Albers, Feldman developed a style blending realism, abstraction, symbolism, and modernist influences while frequently exploring themes of war, spirituality, suffering, and redemption. He gained national recognition for his award-winning woodcuts and paintings, exhibited widely in New York and internationally, and became known for incorporating mosaic techniques and richly textured surfaces into his art after studying in Italy on a Fulbright Fellowship. Feldman spent more than fifty years teaching at Brown University while continuing an acclaimed career in painting, printmaking, stained glass, mosaics, and artists’ books through his innovative Ziggurat Press. His work is held in major collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art, and he continued creating art until his death in 2017.
