[Philadelphia] Union Volunteer Refreshment Saloon, of Philadelphia. Being the First Institution of the Kind in the United States. Organized, May 27th. 1861

Philadelphia: T. Sinclair, 1861. Chromolithograph, by James Queen. Scattered light foxing. Approximately 22 1/4 x 29 1/4 in. (565 x 743 mm) (sight). In mat and unexamined out of frame. Wainwright 412

"In front of a cheering throng, troops march from a wharf to enter the refreshment saloon whose name is featured on a building. Another contingent of troops enters a railroad car of the Philadelphia, Wilmington & Baltimore Railroad. A band in red blouses plays in the center foreground. Names of people connected with the organization are given in the caption. This enterprise was started to systematize relief work for soldiers arriving from the east on their way south. These troops arrived by water at the foot of Washington Avenue just north of the old Navy Yard. After visiting the refreshment saloon at the nearby southwest corner of Swanson and Washington avenues, the troops boarded the cars of the railroad which ran down Washington Avenue, crossed the Schuylkill at Grays Ferry, and headed south to war. The saloon closed on December 1, 1865, after feeding nearly 900,000 troops" (Wainwright).
This lot is located in Philadelphia.
