Exceptional Civil War U.S. Burnside Fifth Model 1864 Breech Loading Percussion Saddle Ring Carbine This is an exceptional example of a 4th Model, Burnside Carbine manufactured by the Burnside Rifle Co. in Providence, Rhode Island. The 5th Model Carbines were the model purchased by the Ordnance Department in the largest quantities, with approximately 43,000 manufactured between 1864-1865. The 5th Model carbine is distinguished from earlier models by the presence of a guide screw hole in the center of the right side of the frame. The frame, hammer, lever release, barrel band, and buttplate are casehardened and the remaining parts are blue. The top of the frame is marked "BURNSIDE PATENT/MODEL OF 1864" over the serial number. The matching serial number is marked on the top of the breech block. The top of the barrel ahead of the rear sight is marked "CAST STEEL 1864" and the lock is marked "BURNSIDE RIFLE Co./PROVIDENCE, R.I." There is a small "B" sub-inspectors mark on the top breech end of the barrel, left front of the frame, saddle ring bar base, bottom of the lever assembly and on both tangs, a "M" on the hammer and buttplate tang, and "MM" on the lever assembly. Pinched blade front and two folding leaf rear sights, saddle ring bar and ring on the left side of the receiver and mounted with a smooth forearm and straight grip stock with an iron carbine buttplate and sling swivel. The left stock wrist has two crisp boxed cartouches and small three letter inspection stamps on the bottom, rear of the forearm and stock directly ahead of the buttplate tang.
