RARE SIGNED MARTIN SHEETZ, SHEPHERDSTOWN, SHENANDOAH VALLEY OF VIRGINIA (NOW WEST VIRGINIA) KENTUCKY-STYLE FLINTLOCK LONG RIFLE, approximately .44 caliber octagonal barrel with incised script "M (five dots) Sheetz" to the top flat, figured maple fullstock with brass furniture including an engraved four-piece patchbox with quatrefoil finial. The stock features a typical carved and incised "Pineapple and Scroll" on the butt with additional incised scrolls, a carved cheek rest, single trigger, brass trigger guard, engraved lockplate marked "WARRANTED", and a wooden ramrod. Stock retains an older dark refinished surface. Martin Sheetz (1776-1807), Shepherdstown, Jefferson Co., Virginia (now West Virginia). Late 18th/early 19th century. 59 3/4" LOA, 43 1/2" barrel. FFL Class: Antique, no registration required.
Catalogue Note: Martin Sheetz, a member of the famous Sheetz family of gunmakers, died at the age of 31. Because of this, only a small number of his rifles have survived. We could locate only three other signed examples, two of which were on display in an exhibition of Sheetz family rifles at the Historic Shepherdstown Museum in 2025. The third example was sold at James D. Julia Auctions in 2006 for $40,250.00.
