ELIZA GOODRIDGE
Massachusetts, 1798-1882
Portrait miniature on ivory of a young girl holding a gray cat.

The girl, wearing a pink and white spotted dress and with her blonde hair held back with tartan bows, is posed beside a bouquet of flowers against a blue-gray striated ground, typical for the artist.

  • Provenance:
    Estate of Edward Grosvenor Paine.
Marguerite Riordan, Stonington, Connecticut, March 11, 1998.
The Collection of Nancy & Larry Dickson.

    Notes:
Eliza Goodridge, sometimes known as Elizabeth, was the younger sister of Sarah Goodridge, also a miniaturist. Both women were self-taught and painted in a similar style, but Sarah's association with Gilbert Stuart, who provided her technical instruction and introduced her to future patrons, advanced her career beyond that of Eliza's. The two worked together in Boston until the 1830s, when Eliza relocated to central Massachusetts. In 1849, at age 51, she married Ephraim Stone, a sawmill and general store owner in Templeton.
  • Dimensions: Watercolor, 3.625" x 2.5". Framed 6.375" x 5.5".
