Maritime artist Robert Hopkin was born on January 3rd, 1832, in Glasgow, Scotland, and was taught to paint and draw by his father. His family emigrated to the United States in 1843 and he spent the rest of his life working in Detroit, Michigan, best known for his stunning scenes of the Great Lakes, and occasionally making return visits to his home country to gather inspiration from the Hebrides and moors. His frequent trips through the American West from 1860 to 1885 resulted in many murals and scenery curtains for theaters, some of which are still preserved by the dry climate. He was considered a pinnacle of Detroit art and taught many students over the years, which eventually led to the founding of the Hopkins Club in 1907 as a get-together for artists to share inspiration; it was renamed the Scarab Club in 1913 and still functions to this day. He died on March 21st, 1909, and his rich realist landscapes continue to be sought by collectors around the globe.
