Large gray-black stone animal head, possibly a bear or dog, mounted on marble base. From Gjoa Haven, an Inuit hamlet in Nunavut, the only settlement on King William Island. Overall size is 10-1/2" high. Provenance: Obtained in 1974 by artist and art collector Helen McGehee Umana from The Innuit Gallery of Eskimo Art in Toronto. Comes with original sales receipt, which reads, "Stone Animal Head from Gjoa Haven by A.U." The initials may belong to Judas Ullulaq (or a relative), as his was the only Gjoa Haven artist with a last initial U, but the piece appears to be unsigned.
