An elegant late nineteenth-century Bohemian art glass claret jug or wine ewer, exquisitely decorated with finely hand-enameled wildflowers and delicate white trailing foliate decoration. The gracefully proportioned clear glass vessel features a baluster-form body rising to a slender neck with an applied loop handle and flared pouring spout, retaining its original faceted amethyst-tinted stopper. The body is beautifully embellished with polychrome enamel decoration depicting sprays of blue forget-me-nots, pink bellflowers, daisies, and other wildflowers, interspersed with finely executed white enamel foliage that wraps the vessel in a light, airy composition. The restrained decoration allows the clarity and quality of the hand-blown glass to remain the focal point while providing exceptional decorative charm. Produced in the renowned glassmaking region of Bohemia—now part of the Czech Republic—such finely enameled tablewares were highly prized throughout Europe and America during the Victorian era. Bohemian glasshouses became internationally celebrated for combining exceptional blown glass with intricate enamel decoration, often accented by colored stoppers and elegant applied handles. Examples of this quality were intended for the refined service of wines, cordials, or vinegars and remain highly sought after by collectors of nineteenth-century European art glass. A refined and highly decorative example that displays beautifully either as part of a period glass collection or as an elegant standalone accent.

  • Literature: Comparable examples illustrated in: • Truitt, Harold Newman, Pictorial History of Glass. • Bickerton, L.M., Eighteenth and Nineteenth Century Glass. • Corning Museum of Glass publications relating to Bohemian enameled art glass of the Victorian period.
  • Circa: Circa 1880–1900.
  • Condition: Overall very good antique condition. Retains the original amethyst-tinted faceted stopper. Minor wear to the enamel decoration consistent with age and careful use. Light surface wear and expected manufacturing irregularities including small bubbles and tool marks typical of hand-blown Bohemian glass. No significant chips or cracks observed from the photographs.
