LONG FAMILY, ADA, HARDIN COUNTY, OHIO PANELED BLANKET CHEST WITH EXUBERANT ORIGINAL PAINTED DECORATION.
American, second quarter 19th Century. Poplar with pegged construction. Lid with applied edge moldings, paneled ends and front, three overlapping lower dovetailed drawers, turned legs, and interior lidded till. Case retains brown over red and yellow graining, drawer fronts with crotch graining, front three panels with dark blue backgrounds and large vases (or urns) of multicolored flowers including tulips, trim and legs with dark green. 31.5"h. 48.5"w. 21.25"d.

Cataloguer's note: Attribution of chests with similar styling to the Long Family have previously documented the location as "Long Road, near Ada" in Allen County, Ohio (see "Ohio Furniture Makers, Volume Two" by Jane Sykes Hageman and Edward M. Hageman (p. 27 & 40). Long Road is very near to the border of Allen and Hardin County, with recent research documenting the Long Family as residing in Liberty Township (see Meander Auctions (Whipple, Ohio), June 28, 2025 (lot 73). For another chest attributed to the Long family, see lot #64 in this auction.

Provenance: The Lifetime Collection of the Late Don Watkin (Washingtonville, Ohio).

  • Condition: Wear to top, including scratches, chips, and edge loss; large chip at back of lid on proper left. Replaced or relocated hinges, alligatored paint, heavy edge wear at tops of drawers, loss to bottom molding at back proper left, feet appear to have been replaced. (NP 7.22.26)
