Burkina Faso. Bateba duntundara or ti puo female figure, carved from single piece of wood including the left arm that is raised with hand in flattened slab form. Ovoid head with down cast upper eyelids, relief ears, long neck above slender torso with pointed breasts. Traces of chicken feathers from offerings. Tan brown patina with remains of blackened slip and deposits. Custom mounted old metal “Base Co.” mount, (Peter Sinclair, active through 1970’s). According to Piet Meyer, “Bateba ti puo” such as this are different than the ordinary bateba, they are carved with one arm up (or both) to protect home against enemies. They are more effective at protecting than ordinary bateba. -Meyer, Piet, Kunst und Religion der Lobi, Zürich 1981, sec. 4.3.1. They could be sculpted following the death of a member of the community, the open arms symbolizing rejection and prevention in the face of looming death. 20.125" H (51.12 cm H).

Provenance: Estate of Dr. Walter Wallace, Princeton, NJ. Collected 1970 - 1980’s.
