LL Marked Flintlock Virginia Style Long Rifle with Silver Inlaid and Incise Carved Stock The only visible marking on this rifle is "LL" in script at the center of the patch box door. The barrel is unmarked, and the lock markings are gone. The overall style suggests the rifle may be from Virginia. The incised carving on the left side is an excellent match for the rifle on page 94 of "Gunsmiths of West Virginia" by Whisker and the carving, patch box and other elements are very similar to the John and Simon Lauck rifles pictured in "Long Rifles of Virginia" by Butler & Whisker and very similar to the lot [LLM671-71] which also has the double acorn inlays. Similar style acorns were also part of the decoration on the Simon Lauck rifle we auctioned on December 5, 2015. The engraved side plate is also similar to those on Sheetz rifles. It also has a dot and border pattern on the muzzle, traditional blade and notch sights, incised line and scroll carving and double acorn inlays on the forend, double set triggers, silver oval inlays on the wrist and cheek piece, and a nicely engraved patch box with pierce floral finial. Manufacturer: Kentucky Model: Flintlock BBL: 41 1/2 inch octagon Stock: maple Gauge: 45 Finish: brown Grips: Serial Number: NSN Class: Antique Condition: Good as reconverted. The barrel and lock have a dark brown mix of applied artificial brown finish, dark patina, and some minor pitting. The brass and silver have aged patina. The stock has several repaired minor cracks and chips, a mended break 14 3/4 inches from the muzzle, repaired and refinished break visible in the wrist, some minor scratches, and five small pins along the front of the comb.
