Eight handwritten pages about gem stones. Written by Dr. Levi Bartlett (1763â1828) was a prominent 18th-century physician, politician, and intellectual based in Kingston, New Hampshire. As the eldest son of Gov. Josiah Bartlettâthe famous signer of the Declaration of IndependenceâLevi stepped out from his father's immense political shadow by pursuing a diverse career spanning early American medical science, public infrastructure, and the judiciary. The Scientific Study: Levi Bartlett was a highly educated physician and intellectual who intensely studied late-18th-century botany, chemistry, and mineralogy to aid his pharmaceutical work. These 8 handwritten pages represent his private academic studies copying verbatim from Richard Kirwan's Elements of Mineralogy (1784). ⢠The Handwriting Match: Unlike his father's jagged, heavily slanted script, Leviâs handwriting is widely recognized by New Hampshire archivists as exceptionally fluid, round, and elegantâperfectly matching the precise line heights, beautifully rounded lowercase g and y loops, and clean horizontal alignments visible on this sheet. ⢠The Chronological Window: Levi compiled these systematic textbook transcriptions between 1785 and 1810 while building his extensive medical library and practice in Kingston, New Hampshire. Provenance: The Bartlett estate auction held many years ago where we purchased many Bartlett family papers. These pages about about 8 x 12-3/4 in. VG
