Qualifies for in-house shipping---Signed letter from William Randolph Hearst, Jr. to Jennings Randolph (U.S. representative and senator from West Virginia who was working for Capital Airlines at the time) referring to the Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1956; typed on Hearst Newspapers, New York, letterhead, stating: "Dear Jennings: Thanks for your very nice letter of July 5th, with reference to our efforts in connection with expanded highways. It was a long pull, but I believe it was worth every bit of the effort we put into it....." The letter refers to the advocacy for the Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1956, which William Randolph Hearst Jr. and Jennings Randolph both supported. Jennings Randolph, who was in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1933-1947 and the U.S. Senate from 1958-1985, began advocating for a national system of inter-linked superhighways in the 1930s laying the groundwork for the modern interstate highway system. William Randolph Hearst, Jr. played a significant role in the expansion of the U.S. highway system . He was instrumental in organizing a nationwide journalistic campaign for better roads, which was conducted by the Hearst newspapers. This campaign aimed to raise awareness about the inadequancies of the existing highways and to advocate for improvements. (Inv. 30)
