Southeast Asia, Laos,, ca. 16th to 19th century CE. A serene cast-bronze Buddha seated in meditation, the right hand lowered to touch the earth in the bhumisparsha mudra, the gesture by which Sakyamuni called the earth to witness his enlightenment and repelled the demon Mara. The oval face, downcast eyes, and gentle smile carry the flame-like ushnisha (rasmi) and tightly coiled snail-shell curls of Lao Buddhist convention, the diagonal sanghati folding across the left shoulder. Now fragmentary, lacking the left knee and the separately cast pedestal it once crowned, the figure retains a quiet devotional presence, likely produced for a temple or elite household shrine. Size: 7.5" W x 11.5" H x 4.63" D (19.1 cm W x 29.2 cm H x 11.8 cm D).

Provenance: private Lafayette, Colorado, USA collection
