Rare Kittredge & Co. Marked Three Digit Serial Number Smith & Wesson Model 1 1/2 "Old Model" Revolver with Factory Letter Manufactured from 1865-1868 with approximately 26,300 produced, the very low three digit serial number would indicate an early first year production. The popularity of the Number Two Army throughout the Civil War pushed Smith & Wesson to produce a more civilian oriented model with the more potent .32 rimfire cartridge. The solution was a slightly smaller frame and a 5 shot cylinder rather than 6. Stamped "B. KITTREDGE & CO./CIN. O." on the left barrel flat. Kittredge & Co. was a well known Ohio sporting goods and arms dealers and agents for many American gun makers of the era. Blade front sight on solid rib barrel marked "SMITH & WESSON. SPRINGFIELD. MASS./PAT'D. APR. 3. 1855 & JULY 5. 1859". Blue barrel, cylinder and frame, casehardened hammer and extractor rod. Finished with smooth varnished grips. The accompanying factory letter lists this revolver with a 3 1/2 inch barrel, blue finish and smooth rosewood stocks when it shipped on June 30, 1865, and delivered to J.W. Storrs, New York City as part of a 100 gun shipment. In the letter S&W historian Roy Jinks states that this shipment was "probably delivered to Kittredge & Co. via Mr. Storrs Company." Manufacturer: Smith & Wesson Model: 1 1/2 BBL: 3 1/2 inch octagon Stock: Gauge: 32 RF Finish: blue Grips: rosewood Serial Number: 643 Class: Antique Condition: Fine. Traces of original blue finish remain on the barrel, all in sheltered areas and the balance is now a mottled gray patina with some minor handling marks and scattered spotting. All markings are crisp and clear. The cylinder is mostly a mottled brown patina. The frame retains 50% original thinning blue finish the balance is a mottled gray patina with a few surface scratches. The casehardened hammer and extractor rod still display faint but visible original case colors. The grips have had an old coat of varnish applied but are otherwise fine. The action is fine. Overall a seldom encountered rare marked three digit Smith & Wesson 1 1/2 old model.
