Incised Carved and Silver Inlaid Percussion Conversion American Long Rifle Signed "S B" This American long rifle is signed "S B" with a "=I=" shaped device between the letters on the top of the barrel between the notch rear sight and breech. The signature is a near match for other rifles built by Samuel Baum (1769-1842) of Springfield Township, Bucks County and New Berlin, Union County, Pennsylvania. The rifle has similar silver inlays and other ornamentation to known Baum guns, but we cannot guarantee it is his work. Note the long comb plate and triple pierced toe plate. The tear drop and hear silver inlays on the wrist are fitted in the exact same manner as multiple known Baum rifles. The side plate design also matches Baum family guns, and the patch box with its triple pierced spire style finial and quad pierced side plates and subtle engraving is also the correct style for between the War of 1812 and Baum's death. The rifle has fairly low profile blade and notch sights, a wedge secured full octagon barrel, silver moon wedge escutcheons, "WARRANTED" marked lock with bird engraving at the tail and scrollwork on the conversion hammer, a plain trigger, silver hunter's star on the cheekpiece, staples below the cheekpiece for securing a vent pick, and distinct, intertwined C Rococo scrollwork carving on the left side of the Roman nose profile butt. Manufacturer: Kentucky Model: Percussion BBL: 44 inch octagon Stock: maple Gauge: 45 Finish: brown Grips: Serial Number: NSN Class: Antique Condition: Good with mostly a dark brown patina overall on the iron, heavy flash pitting at the breech, and some minor marks and scratches. The brass and silver have aged patinas and minor marks. The stock is fair and has likely been partially refinished. It has an absent wear plate on bottom of forend, chipping and cracking along the edges of the forend (with absent wood), flash wear near the breech, the common tension crack at the rear lock screw, and some slight white speckling. The lock functions fine, and the engraving and markings are mostly crisp.
