Kentucky Federal Cherry Jackson Press
This early Jackson press has cherry primary wood with popular secondary wood throughout. It has a two-part construction. The uppercase is dovetailed construction with the top, bottom and shelves dovetailed into grooves in the sideboards of the case. The back boards are hand chamfered and planed. They fit into a groove in the sideboards of the case. The top has an original crown molding around the top edge. It has double paneled blind doors on the top. The blind doors conceal three shelves. The top of the lower case has quarter round molding outlining the uppercase bottom. The upper and lower blind doors retain their original locks and keys. The base has two side by side drawers over two blind doors. The blind doors are flanked by large smooth full turned columns. The lower case sits over four massive turned 8" tall legs that have a smooth section and end out in an urn turning. The two drawers have dovetail construction and have two wooden pulls each. The bottom blind doors have single cherry board panels. There are also single board cherry panels on each side of the case. The backs of all the panels have evidence of hand planing and chamfering. The lower section blind doors conceal two shelves. The back of both pieces has a uniform oxidation patina throughout consistent with over 200 years of age. The single board cherry panels on this piece are quite unique. In most furniture of this period, the grain of the blind planes would customarily run longitudinally (up and down) with the case. However, all the grains of the blind panels in this piece run transversely (side to side). Orienting the grains of the blind panels in this manner would have required massive virgin timber. This growth of cherry would have only been available to the earliest of settlers in the Commonwealth's infancy. This piece is likely an early Jefferson County, KY example circa 1790-1830. It was found in a Shelby County, KY estate. Nailed to the top of the top case is an old label from a Louisville furniture restoration company. The name and address of the owner at that time is hand written on the tag. Provenance: This piece was part of the collection of the late Mrs. Myra Swope Munday of historic Bright's Inn in Stanford, KY. Bright's Inn was built by a Kentucky Revolutionary War veteran Captain John Bright. It was a frontier stage coach stop on the Wilderness Trail and hosted many early Kentucky settlers and statesmen from the late 1700s until the early 1900s. Dimensions 85 ½" tall by 44 ½" wide by 21 ½" deep.
