  • Notes:
Keith Haring developed his uniquely animated artistic style from an early fascination with cartoon art from figures like Walt Disney, Charles Schultz and Dr. Seuss. His father, Allen Haring, was a hobby cartoonist apart from his career in engineering. The two would spend hours drawing together during Haring's formative years.

In 1978, Haring moved to New York City and connected with other emerging artists such as Jean-Michel Basquiat and Andy Warhol, who greatly influenced his work throughout the duration of his career. With no gallery representation initially, Haring created his works as Street Art in the subways and streets of New York City. He then began making stand-alone works and had his first solo exhibition by 1981. Just seven years later, in 1988, Haring was diagnosed with AIDS and he died of AIDS-related complications two years later.

Haring's work is defined by simple lines, bright colors, and dancing figures that communicated messages about love, unity, social justice, and activism. Throughout his career, he used his art to address important issues such as apartheid, drug abuse, and AIDS awareness.

In the "Growing" series, the expanding figures and repeating shapes symbolize development, creativity, and the continuous cycle of life. The prints also demonstrate Haring's influence from street art and graffiti culture, as their simple yet expressive imagery communicates powerful ideas in an immediate way. The "Growing" series featured five images, the four horizontal compositions offered in this sale, plus one vertical composition.
