"The biography of the travels of Joseph Revere (1812–1880). He had a distinguished military and Naval career, a combination of travelogue, biography and military history involving exotic locations and unusual incidents. He was the grandson of Revolutionary War Patriot Paul Revere. In 1828 at age sixteen, he joined the US Navy, fought in the Mexican American War and achieved the rank of Lieutenant. At the start of the Civil War, he was commissioned Colonel of the 7th New Jersey Infantry, fought in the Peninsula Campaign and led the 3rd Corps during the Seven Days Battle. For his actions at Second Bull Run, he was promoted Brigadier General. In October, 1862, he was court-martialed after the Battle of Chancellorsville and resigned from military service. The author recounts his travels around the globe during his naval service, his activities in the Mexican-American War and Civil War. Of special note is his being in California and San Francisco at the time of the gold rush and his comments on San Francisco at that time."
