KAREL BENES (Czech, 1932-2021) "Wine" 1985 - Limited edition lithograph on light card stock, 115/200 - Signed, dated and editioned lower centre. Unframed. 4 x 3.25 inches (image), 6 x 4 inches (paper). Excellent condition. Created as an ex libris bookplate for Pim Zwiers. This print is illustrated on page 79 of the 1992 book Wine Exlibris written by Lou Hoefnagels.

  • Medium: Limited edition lithograph on light card stock, 115/200
  • Notes: Karel Benes was born in 1932 in Vlcnov, Czech Republic. In 1947 he started studying glassworking at the Upper School of Art in Jablonec nad Nisou. During this study he excelled at drawing and was eventually able to transfer to the Academy of Arts, Architecture & Design in Prague, where he studded from 1950 to 1955. There he focused on printmaking, often featuring themes from his native Moravia. In the 1980s he gained international recognition for his ex libris bookplates, which he had been introduced to by graphic artist Emil Kotrba. During his career Benes created more than five hundred ex libris, and he was a prolific book illustrator, exhibiting widely throughout Europe. Karel Benes died in 2021, in Prague.

Saskatchewan Network for Art Collecting can provide purchasers with several options for packing and shipping throughout Canada, the US and internationally. All packing and shipping is done at the expense of the purchaser. If you are the successful bidder on one or more lots, you will receive an email directly from the auction house within 48 hours. Please then contact us to discuss your packing, shipping and pick-up preferences (and we can remove artworks from framing in order to ship without frame and glass). All artworks are located in Regina, Saskatchewan and are available for pick-up. Also, we are currently offering free delivery in Regina on invoices over $200, and occasional delivery trips are made to Saskatoon to hand-deliver to Saskatoon home addresses for a small fee when there is sufficient demand. We can pack and ship throughout Canada and internationally, or can deliver your artworks to a recognized international shipper for them to pack and ship via their direct communications with you. For US buyers, note that all Canadian and US artworks have been proceeding as tariff exempt under the terms of the Canada-US-Mexico Free Trade Agreement, but the situation can change. Artworks with a country of origin other than Canada, US or Mexico are more likely to have a tariff fee added by US Customs.
