JOHN SCOTT
United Kingdom, 1802-1885
'Ellergill in the Dover Straits".

Depicts the bark Ellergill in two positions entering the Dover Straits amidst other shipping against a background of the White Cliffs and Dover Castle. Signed and dated lower right "J. Scott 1856". Housed in a fine gilt frame.

  • Provenance: Notes:
The Ellergill was built in Hull in 1814 for J. and R. Gill. Registered at 360 tons, she sailed from Hull and other English and Irish ports to the eastern coast of Canada and America. She is recorded as having carried immigrants from Londonderry to Philadelphia in 1834 and from Hull to Quebec in 1843.

John Scott lived and worked in Newcastle-on-Tyne, painting mainly vessels shown in one or two positions at sea with either Dover or Tynemouth in the distance.

Scott's paintings are in the collections of the National Maritime Gallery in Greenwich, England, the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts, among others.
