JOHN ERIK CHRISTIAN PETERSEN
Massachusetts/Denmark, 1839-1874
The packet ship Robert D. Brown outward bound.

Signed and dated lower right "John E.C. Petersen 1869-1872".

  • Provenance:
    Mary Griggs Burke, Minneapolis.
  • Dimensions: Oil on canvas, 42" x 72". Unframed.
  • Exhibited:
    Cincinnati Industrial Exposition, 1875.

    Notes:
John Erik Christian Petersen arrived from Copenhagen in the late summer of 1865 and befriended the prominent Appleton and Longfellow families of Boston, appearing as a regular guest at the Appleton's summer retreat at Nahant.

He also gained fast acceptance as a gifted and important marine painter, exhibiting "Portrait of the Yacht Dreadnought on the Western Ocean" in 1871 at the National Academy of Design.

The painting offered here was worked on over three years, as indicated by its date of 1869-1872. Its complexity, size and magnificent detail indicate it was a highly important work for the artist, perhaps intended as an exhibition piece or a commission for an important client.

The scene depicts the Black Ball packet "Robert D. Brown", as identified at the stern. While we can find no record of a ship of this name, it is consistent with other Black Ball line vessels of the era and is flying the customary house flag. While many lines focused on cargo and trade routes, the Black Ball Line pioneered passenger travel and flourished as immigration to America exploded in the mid-19th Century. Petersen acknowledges this by showing numerous figures lining the deck of the ship as they await making port in New York Harbor.

While the packet is the focal point of the painting, Petersen has created a vibrant picture of the active harbor, showing several other vessels of various nationalities scattered throughout the composition, eight in close proximity and a dozen or more on the far horizon. A large side-wheeler off the Brown's port is sailing directly at the viewer, billowing a full head of steam, and a smaller vessel to the Brown's starboard is on such a close tack the passengers on both vessels are interacting with each other. While the scale of the scene is grand, filled with dynamic tension heightened by the choppy water and the brisk breeze, Petersen has created moments of intimacy that draw you in for a closer look. Chaos and jubilation coexist in equal measure.

Given its grandeur, it is possible to suggest this was a highly personal work for the artist. The optimistic tone it imparts, welcoming new Americans to their new home, is possibly a fond memory of his own immigration just a few years prior.
