Joel Chandler Harris and his "Uncle Remus" series are indicative of the complexity American history. Harris, a white man, borrowed extensively from African-American oral storytelling traditions to create his tales and characters. His work would go on to influence a variety of white writers including Mark Twain, A.A. Milne, Ezra Pound, T.S. Eliot, and many others. To some, the stories in this volume are a type of literary blackface, disrespectful to black Americans and frustrating to those who would like to see our culture progress. To others, these stories are iconic childhood classics which have withstood the test of time because of their subversion, wit, and humor.
