Cardinal-Schubert, RCA, Joane (Canadian/Alberta, First Nations Artist, 1942-2009), Elk Woman's Dream, late 20th/early 21st century, oil on paper, signed and titled near the center of the piece. Sheet 36 x 11.5 inches. Behind glass, floated, matted, and in a 47 x 22 inch black frame. An important and influential multiple medium artist (painting, drafting, printmaking, sculpture, installation, video, performance), activist, writer, public speaker, educator, museum curator and leader in the aboriginal art community, Joane Cardinal-Schubert was born in Red Deer, Alberta and died in Calgary, Alberta, where she had lived for most of her life. Her art education includes studies in painting, printmaking and multimedia at the Alberta College of Art [now the Alberta College of Art and Design], Calgary (1962 - 1962 and c.1966 - 1968) where she earned a certificate in printmaking and painting; the University of Alberta, Edmonton (1973); and, graduation with a BFA from the University of Calgary in 1977. She also earned a Certificate in Arts Management from the Banff Centre School of Management, Banff, Alberta in 1983. A central figure in Canadian aboriginal art for the last two decades of her life, she was a member of a plethora of activist and art organizations including the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. In addition to numerous museum exhibitions across Canada, her works have been featured in exhibitions at important venues in the USA, France, Russia, Taiwan, New Zealand, Mexico, Japan, Korea and elsewhere. Her works are in the permanent collections of many major museums such as the National Museum of the American Indian (Washington, D.C.), the Canadian Museum of History (National Capital Region), and the National Gallery of Canada (Ottawa).
