World War II Japanese Registered Class III/NFA Destructive Device Type 89, 50mm Grenade Discharger This is a completely intact, and fully registered WWII Japanese Type 89, 50mm grenade discharger. This was the later model that was considerably improved over the earlier version. It was still the standard hand-carried infantry model that was developed in 1928 and used all the way through WWII. This model was specifically intended to replace the original model 1921. This model could fire two different types of shells the type 89 shell, (high explosive) which an effective range of 700 yards and the type 91 hand grenade which had an effective range of 210 yards. The difference between this model and the earlier one was that this one had a rifled barrel to increase range and accuracy when using the type 89 high explosive shell. The range is adjusted by a small wheel on the side of the barrel extension that would move the firing pin up housing or down inside the barrel and pedestal. This example is missing he small trigger mechanism usually located on the side of the pedestal. Like the earlier 1921 model it was a continuous fire weapon in that all you had to do was drop the grenade down the barrel and pull the small trigger/lanyard on the side of the barrel extension. It was aimed by simply sighting down the line on the side of the barrel.
