A Japanese Satsuma earthenware vase from the Meiji period. The vessel is decorated with a high-relief moriage dragon coiled around the neck and shoulder, finished in gold and red. The body features a group of Arhats, also known as Rakan, depicted with golden halos against a cream-colored crackle glaze ground. The neck and foot are finished with geometric diaper and Greek key borders in gold and black. The underside bears a gilded mark consisting of the Shimazu family crest above three columns of Japanese characters framed by two dragons.
