East Asia, Japan, Meiji era, ca. early 20th century CE. A matched pair of Japanese porcelain tea cups, decorated in the Eiraku style with gold gilt over an iron-red ground. The exterior features gilt auspicious cloud scrolls and symbols of good fortune; the interiors are finished in white glaze with a cobalt underglaze scalloped roundel at center depicting a phoenix, the rims accented with gilt and double blue-line decoration. Both cups bear a hand-painted mark on the base reading Zengoro (Eiraku family). Size: 3.5" Diameter x 2.25" H (8.9 cm x 5.7 cm)
