JAMES M. TUTTLE
(1823-1892) Union general who commanded a division in the Army of Tennessee in Western Operations, led first Union troops to pierce the Confederate lines at Fort Donelson in 1862, also commanded at Shiloh which gallantly fought at the ‘Hornet's Nest'. War-date manuscript L.S. 1p. 4to. Camp Montgomery, Miss., July 19, 1862, from Union soldiers and officers to Governor Kirkwood and recommending Wesley H. Henderson for commission into an Iowa regiment as ‘…a most worthy man, and an efficient and well-drilled soldier…constantly on duty since the organization of this Regiment…'. Signed by Tuttle at bottom, as well as: Col. JAMES BAIRD WEAVER, wounded in action at Fort Donelson, later brevetted brigadier general; Lt. GEORGE F. HALL, also wounded at Fort Donelson, and four others. Very good.
