Scarce Engraved German Silver Mounted Jacob Kunz Philadelphia Underhammer Percussion Target Rifle Jacob Kunz (also Kuntz) (1780-1876) was born and trained in the Lehigh Valley but spent most of his working life in Philadelphia. He is best known for his high end Pennsylvania long rifles (two reside in the Metropolitan Museum of Art), but he is also known to have built a wide variety of other fine firearms. The barrel is marked "J. KUNZ PHILADA." It features: a false muzzle, a replacement combination front sight, an engraved silver filler block in the rear dovetail, horn forend cap, a modern peep sight fitted on the German silver thumb plate, animal themed hammer, double set triggers, German silver trigger guard, ornate patch box with fine floral and scroll engraving, horn button for the patch box release on the engraved toe plate, and a nicely sculpted cheekpiece. Applied brown finish is visible on the barrel overall along with some mild tool marks and edge wear, some minor pitting and oxidation (mostly around the hammer), aged patina on the German silver, and minor marks and scratches on the refinished stock.
