John Quincy Adams
[Washington, DC], March 23, 1835
J.Q. Adams PSA Slabbed GEM MT 10! Finest Known Twice Signed Bank Check, JSA LOA
DS

A bank check twice signed by John Quincy Adams (1767-1848), former 6th U.S. President, the first time as "J.Q. Adams" on the signature line; and the second time as "J.Q. Adams" on the payee line. March 23, 1835. [Washington, D.C.] Check No. 317 directed cashiers at the Second Bank of the United States in Washington, D.C. to release $200 to Adams himself. Partly printed and partly manuscript in Adams's hand on watermarked paper. Cancelled near the center with an x-shaped perforation with a tiny hole. Encapsulated, with both signatures PSA/DNA certified and graded GEM MT 10. Expected wear including isolated discoloration in some corners recto from old mounting traces verso, else near fine. The check measures 7.75" x 2.25". The slab measures 12.375" x 5.625" x .25". Comes with a JSA Letter of Authenticity, certification number YY03910, dated February 9, 2026.

A single Adams signed ungraded check sold at RR Auctions in 2025 for over $3,000 - an example not even close to this one!

Adams drew a significant sum from his bank account just three weeks after the opening of the 24th U.S. Congress on March 4, 1835; he had represented Massachusetts in the U.S. House of Representatives since 1831. A zealous defender of the Second Bank of the United States - especially in the face of criticisms lodged against it by his 1828 presidential opponent, Andrew Jackson - it is no wonder that Adams held an account there.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
