Two issues of the journal 'Igeret La'Chayal Ha'Dati' by 'Agudat Yisrael'
The first issue, from 18.6.1948, notes that on 28.5.1912 'Agudat Yisrael' had been founded.
The second issue, from 25.6.1948, includes an obituary announcing the death of the Rebbe of Gur, the president of Moetzet Gdolei Ha'Torah.
This journal was for religious soldiers of the IDF, some of which joined the army at the call of Agudat Yisrael to join the army during the War of Independence.
'Agudat Yisrael' was founded in 1912 in Kattowitz, Poland. Its declared goal was "to solve in the spirit of the Torah and its commandments the daily problems that might arise in the Jewish nation". 'Agudat Yisrael' was led by Moetzet Gdolei Ha'Torah. It was founded in order to counterbalance Zionism and the 'Mizrachi' Movement. In 1937, subsequent to the Peel Commission, the members of the council of 'Agudat Yisrael' were divided regarding the question of whether the establishment of the State was a positive move. Many of the Rebbes of Hungary and the Czech Republic objected to the move claiming that the state-to-be will be secular. Conversely, many of the Rebbes of Poland saw the establishment of the State as a Divine move and claimed that the Haredi Jews could unite and win the leadership of the State.
After the Holocaust and the destruction of the European Jewry, 'Agudat Yisrael' became closer to the idea of a homeland in the Land of Israel. Rabbi Yitzchak Meir Levin, the leader of 'Agudat Yisrael' and the son-in-law of the Rebbe of Gur signed the Scroll of Independence together with the representatives of the other parties and the younger members of 'Agudat Yisrael' took part in the War of Independence, as the interesting item before us indicates.
Rare and interesting!
