First Edition in Irish Printed by the Propaganda Press

Rome: Sacrae Congreg. de Propaganda Fide, 1676. First edition. 8vo. (iv), 391, (1), viii pp. Texted printed in Latin and in Irish. Three-quarter brown calf over blue-green pebbled cloth-covered boards, morocco spine label, stamped in blind and in gilt. calf scuffed and moderately worn; red speckled edges; bottom corner A6 and Q3 repaired; scattered spotting and soiling to text.

Scarce first edition of this Irish-language catechism of the doctrines of the Catholic Church, the first book in Irish issued from the press of the Congregatio de Propaganda Fide.

Francis Molloy (ca. 1606-77) was a Franciscan friar, theologian, and grammarian. Molloy entered the Franciscan order in 1632, and then briefly taught in Vienna, before returning to Rome in 1652 to teach philosophy and theology at the college of St. Isidore. During his life he published several works, including the present (his most popular), as well as the first printed Irish grammar.
