Inscribed, Factory Engraved, Colt Model 1877 Thunderer Double Action Revolver with Pearl Grips and Factory Letter This Colt Model 1877 Lighting D.A. revolver is inscribed "Elfego Baca" on the back strap. Elfego Baca (1864-1945) was a famous lawman and politician in Socorro County, New Mexico. In 1884, Deputy Sheriff Baca was involved in several shootings with Texas cowboys in Socorro County. Baca was charged with the murder of one cowboy but was acquitted. He later was elected sheriff of Socorro County and became a lawyer and member of the New Mexico Bar. The revolver has a silver plated finish with scroll engraving. The coverage approximates Colt "B" engraving and features zig-zag, dot and star borders. The revolver has a full silver-plated finish with two-piece pearl, bird's head grips. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the two-line Hartford address surrounded by a double wavy line and dot border. The left side of the barrel is roll-stamped "COLT D.A. 41" within an engraved banner. The caliber designation "41" is stamped on the underside of the barrel. The left side of the frame is roll-stamped with the Colt 'three-date/three-line' patent markings high-lighted by an engraved flourish. "41 CAL" is stamped on the left shoulder of the trigger guard. The full serial number "39722" is stamped on the bottom of the frame, trigger guard and butt. All of the visible serial numbers match. A Colt factory letter with the revolver describes it as factory engraved and nickel-plated with a 4 1/2 -inch barrel and no ejector. The letter states that the revolver was shipped to the E.C. Meacham Arms Company in St. Louis, Missouri, on April 30, 1886. The revolver is accompanied by a notarized letter from a well known restorer stating his great grandmother received this revolver for a debt, a Colt Model 1877 Survey, four books on Elfego Baca and a Walt Disney still photo from "Six Gun Law" series about Baca.
