HISTORIC FABERGE GOLD & ENAMEL JETON, TILLANDER.
Comprising a gold and enamel commemorative jeton for the Moscow Horse-drawn Railway. Tillander, St. Petersburg, 1908-1917. Formed as a shield, the surface applied with an enameled double-headed eagle against a yellow ground, the reverse with champleve Cyrillic initials for the Moscow Horse-drawn Railway, the 2nd line, and named for S.S. Polyakov. The loop stamped AT for Alexander Tillander and with 56 gold standard. Height 1.2 inches (3.0cm).

The horse-drawn railway was widely used as a mode of public transport in the 19th century. Originally created in 1875, the First Society of Horse Drawn Railway joined forces with the Belgian General Company of Moscow and Russia's tramway system to create 25 lines. In Moscow, the network existed until 1912, when it was replaced by trams.

S. S. Polyakov (Samuel Solomonovich Polyakov, 1837–1888) was a prominent Russian entrepreneur and industrialist of the 19th century, known as the "Railway King." He built approximately a quarter of all railways in the Russian Empire, was involved in major banking, and became renowned as a generous philanthropist. In the 1860s and 1870s, he was involved in the construction of key highways in the south of Russia, including the Kursk-Kharkov-Azov railway. He founded Russia's first railway school (in Yelets, 1867) and the first private mining school (in Gorlovka). He donated large sums to student dormitories and the Russian Technical Society. He held the rank of privy councillor, was one of the founders of ORT (Society of Craft Labor) and took an active part in Jewish civil life, financing the construction of synagogues.

  • Condition: The enameled shield depicting the coat of arms of Moscow (St. George slaying a dragon) has a cloudy covering of clear enameling with some losses to that clear enameling. Otherwise in verygood condition as shown.
