Smith was born in Chicago, Illinois, the son of Justin A and Mary L Smith. In 1899, he married his cousin, Katherine Augusta Smith (1874–1940).

Condition / Notes: This is a scarce author-signed first edition of this work. The inscription on the front flyleaf reads "For my friend Leroy T. Goble / From the imitation hard-boiled / Henry Justin Smith."

This antique volume is bound in burnt orange cloth with stamped black lettering to the spine and front cover. The book shows very light shelfwear, with darkening to the spine. The binding is firm. The interior is clean and without markings.

This book is from the library of Leroy Truman Goble, a minor figure in the Chicago literary renaissance of the 1920's. Goble was friendly with the likes of Sherwood Anderson and Ben Hecht. He was also a photographer and artist, although he seems to have worked in the fledgling advertising in Chicago during that time.
