HENRI-JACQUES CLARKE, DUC DE FELTRE
(1765 - 1818) French marshal, the private secretary to Napoleon during the Consulat, and Minister of War (1807-14) during Napoleon's campaigns. Fine content manuscript L.S. ‘Duc de Feltre', 2pp. legal folio, Paris, March 21, 1814. On his official Minister of War letterhead to Hungarian General Jean-Francois L'Hullier, presenting Napoleon's orders for troops to assemble and then proceed to the Military Hospital in Lyon. The total of 5,950 men are organized into battalions and ordered to march ‘…in two columns under the orders of General [Frederic] Beurmann…[and] arrive a Libourne on 29 and 31 March, by way of Limoges and Perigueux, if they encounter no obstacle...' Clarke also gives orders for a detachment to move towards Roanne, and troops to return to Lyon, and places under the command of L'Hullier ‘…two provisional cavalry regiments' that currently serve under Olivier Rivaud de la Raffiniere. The day of our orders, March 21, 1814, marked the conclusion of Battle of Arcis-sur-Aube -- a critical moment in the War of the Sixth Coalition in which Napoleon's outnumbered French was forced to retreat by a massive Coalition force led by Karl Philipp, Prince of Schwarzenberg. As such, it was significant loss that forced Napoleon's final, desperate retreat toward Saint-Dizier before his first abdication. Folds, very good.
