  • Notes: Guillermo Silva Santamaria was born in 1921 in Bogota, Colombia. As a teenager he went to Paris to study with artist Pierre Daguet, returning to Bogota in 1939. There he continued to study and to exhibit his work, with his first solo exhibition in 1948. In 1950 he began teaching at the Escuela de Bellas Artes, in Bogota, but moved to Mexico City in 1956 where he studied engraving at Escuela Nacional de Pintura, Escultura y Grabado. The following year Silva took a printmaking course at Washington University, and his first show in the US occurred in 1957. He then returned to Mexico City and began teaching at the Iberoamericana University and later at the National Autonomous University of Mexico. Silva developed a surrealist style explored most effectively in printmaking, and he was a recognized master of the intaglio print. By 1960 his work had gained international recognition, with exhibitions in Europe and in 1961 he won first prize for engraving at The Canadian Painters and Etchers Society exhibition at the Royal Ontario Museum (Toronto). His work was frequently exhibited at top museums such as Boston Museum of Fine Arts, Brooklyn Museum, Museum of Modern Art (New York) and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Later in life he spent years studying yoga in India before moving to Europe. Guillermo Silva Santamaria died in 2007 in Jevnaker, Norway.
