Oil on canvas

The offered lot is a faithful and period rendition of an iconic 19th century American historical painting based on the original by Hudson River School founder Asher Brown Durand. It depicts the pivotal 1780 Revolutionary War moment when a British spy was apprehended, exposing Benedict Arnold's plot to surrender West Point. The spy, British intelligence officer Major John Andre, was intercepted behind American lines near Tarrytown, New York. He was carrying the plans to the pivotal American fort at West Point in his boots (shown in left foreground), which had been supplied by the traitorous General Benedict Arnold. Andre was detained by three local American militiamen dressed in civilian clothes: John Paulding, Isaac Van Wart, and David Williams. The prototype, painted in the 1840s, elevates the ordinary citizens of the militia, symbolizing Revolutionary patriotism and vigilance. The image reached an enormous American audience through an acclaimed 1845–1846 engraving by Alfred Jones and James Smillie, which was published by the American Art-Union.
