George Knell Inscribed, German Silver Mounted, and Engraved Back Action Half Stock Percussion Rifle The barrel has blade and notch sights, bands at the breech, and a "D" on the bottom at the breech. The back action lock has a reposed dog, some floral accents, and border engraving. It is equipped with a single set trigger. The upper tang has two empty taps that are likely for use with a peep sight. A silver inlay is on the left side of the wrist. The remaining furniture is German silver with primarily border engraving. The patch box door is inscribed "George Knell" in script. The toe plate has three cap compartments. The cheek rest has a bald eagle design as does the side plate on the butt on the left. Rifles of the same basic design and using some of the same components and patterns are known by Robinson of Philadelphia around the mid-19th century. The exact George Knell the inscription is for is not documented, but there was a George Knell active in the period in Philadelphia as a manufacturer and retailer of upholstery and furniture. Manufacturer: American Model: Half Stock BBL: 32 1/4 inch octagon Stock: walnut Gauge: 55 Finish: brown/casehardened/bright Grips: Serial Number: NSN Class: Antique Condition: Good with a dark brown blend of fading original finish and patina on the iron, heavy edge and barrel marks visible on the barrel, light aging of the German silver, crisp markings and engraving, and some white material in the recesses. The front sling swivel, middle ramrod ferrule, and forend cap are absent, and the right wedge plate is cracked. The stock is fair with a large slivers of the forend absent ahead of the wedge, cracks on the right by the breech and lock, general light scratches and dings, and some loosening plates. Mechanically fine. German silver mounted percussion rifles are rare, and those with inscriptions and patriotic designs are particularly desirable.
